Ramie is a bast plant fibre so hasn’t needed the same level of chemical processing that is required for viscose.
Ramie is processed from plants belonging to the Nettle family and is one of the worlds oldest fibre crops.
Ramie is one of the strongest natural fibres and has even greater strength when wet.
*Bast fibre, also called phloem fibre, is a type of plant fibre that can be collected from the phloem or bast surrounding the stem of certain dicotyledonous plants.
